On August 26, 2016 Polly took a call from a distraught parent stating her daughter was suicidal and had left in a vehicle. The daughter began texting her mother that she was going to crash her car to kill herself. Hooker asked the mother for her daughter’s cell phone number and once Hooker got the appropriate help started, she initiated a text to the daughter, who answered within a few minutes. Although the daughter was less than happy to be texting with Hooker she did continue to respond. Hooker continued the conversation and gave her good advice, warning her that driving while upset isn’t safe for her or others on the road and asked her to pull over. Hooker continued to text back and forth with empathy and kindness. The officers on duty found the daughter driving and pulled her over. She was found safe and was given appropriate treatment to help her.
“Smart911Chat helped make contact with this young lady.” said Supervisor Debbie Malone, “Polly’s actions were words of kindness, compassion, and understanding. The text exchange between the two kept the female occupied and may have given her pause to reconsider her actions.”
